Funny Little (Inter) Wars: The latest volume of FLW is an attempt to imagine what ‘Little Wars’ may have looked like if HG Wells had continued developing the game in the 1920’s and 1930’s. This is the era of high adventure and proper chaps like Biggles and Tintin. It brings the game bang up to date (1938) and has many of the icons of the period appearing in the garden wargame; the Tankette, Tri-Motor bomber and motor cycle combination, and of course there is still a place for bicycles and pigeons, and even Swiss anti-tank chocolates. The game is placed within the context of the smaller European ‘Neutrality’ nations and ‘imagi-nations’, and include two other responses to the horror of ‘Big War’. The theoretical or technical armies of the airborne ‘Deep Battle’ and its Soviet practitioners and the Shield of deterrence and the great Maginot Line. Endless opportunities await, and in the words of Captain W.E. Johns: “One of the most delightful things about a garden is the anticipation it brings.”
